Viewpoint Sponsors FIRST LEGO League

Viewpoint is a proud sponsor of a Webster NY-based FIRST LEGO League team.

You likely already know that the FIRST program is based around robotics and aimed at high schoolers. For younger kids, FIRST and LEGO developed an alliance around programming an autonomous robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology. The teams have to score points in 2.5-minute matches on a themed playing field. This robotics program is designed for 9 to 14 year olds to get them excited about science and technology.

We were very proud that the Webster team did very well in a recent event!

Check out www.firstlegoleague.org for more information.

Cool Video

Here’s a video of Arthur Benjamin, a“mathemagician” who does some cool numeric tricks. He is a professor at Harvey Mudd who specializes in Combinatorics and Game Theory. Apparently, he’s also very good at calculating in his head.

Here’s a recent paper of his that explains some of the techniques: http://www.math.hmc.edu/~benjamin/papers/Cubing.pdf. Enjoy!

Thanks for reading!

Part 2: Architecture Design for the LabVIEW CLD and Other Apps

Last month’s issue of this newsletter reviewed some tips for improving your outcome on the CLD. Since most of those tips were useful for many LabVIEW applications, the next few issues of this newsletter will cover the development of a basic “CLD-style” application, the architecture of which can be used for many types of applications.

This month’s issue will outline the goals of this basic app and continue to include some source code snippets for your own use.The goal is to improve LabVIEW coding methods for the CLD and your own applications. Want to improve your LabVIEW skills, then read on...

Legoland

On June 7, 1968 Legoland opened its first theme park in its hometown of Billund, Denmark. The park featured detailed city scenes modeled in interlocking L bricks and attracted 3,000 visitors on opening day and 625,000 visitors in its first year. International expansion began in 1997 first in Windsor, England, followed by parks in Carlsbad, California, and Günzburg, Germany. These days, the average Legoland sees about 1.5 million visitors each year. There are some roller coasters and other rides including the Volvo driving school where kids get to drive on an open course and earn their own “driver’s licenses”. Lego models remain in the forefront of the parks décor. The California Legoland has 15,000 individual models, created from more than 35 million bricks, sprinkled throughout the 128-acre park.

In 2005 the parks were sold by the Lego Group to an entertainment-management group as part of a corporate restructuring. However, there continues to be a tight partnership between the two companies. The parks remain popular internationally and there are plans to open new Legoland theme parks in Malaysia, Dubai and Florida within the next five years.
