Notes from the EditorNI Embedded System Integrator Program

Viewpoint has once again been invited down to Austin for week-long discussions, training on latest products, and meetings with product teams. We focused on NI VeriStand the last time. This time we are proud to have been selected for an initiative recognizing the top integrators in the real-time embedded market. As NI has evolved, they realized the need to identify integrators with skills aligned with certain product lines. Viewpoint was selected because of our extensive capabilities with the LabVIEW RT and LabVIEW FPGA on the PXI and RIO platforms. That experience couples nicely with our work in the traditional embedded space. We are excited about working with NI on growing this market.

Cool Video

Speaking of LabVIEW RT, here is a video associated with an application we delivered recently to a customer. The customer has patented sensor technology for reducing waste in glass bottle manufacturing. This technology works with existing equipment via a retrofit. We delivered a system that uses NI hardware to monitor the process in real-time and enables the operator to make adjustments to accommodate process variations.

Watch the equipment in action as it moves molten glass gobs around to form the bottles.

That’s a lot of bottles!

Part 2: Cost Analysis for Buy vs. Build in Prototyping with Embedded Systems

Last month, I talked about some of the options for prototyping new product ideas. Remember, this can be a new subsystem of an existing product or a completely new product idea.

This month, Carl Kosmerl, Viewpoint’s Custom Electronics Product Manager, analyzes a hypothetical situation to illustrate making the product by buying off-the-shelf components or building with custom PCB. This hypothetical example is very useful to explore the many options to consider. Even so, it develops a perhaps surprising conclusion so read on.

A New Perspective on Gaming

May 5, 1992 is the day that id Software released a game that revolutionized the gaming experience. Even though it was not the first game to be labeled as a “first-person shooter” for the PC, Wolfenstein 3-D brought the first-person experience to new levels. Consisting of the first 10 missions, the shareware episode drops the player into the perspective of a captured solider.

A key component of Wolfenstein’s success was the massive online distribution of the shareware version of the game. The story line does not end after the shareware episode, and the number of full (paid) versions sold helped establish shareware distribution as a serious and profitable business strategy.
