Graphical System Design Achievement Award
Viewpoint is proud to announce that
our paper “Remote Structural Health Assessment of LIRR Railroad Viaduct”
has been selected as a winner in the Embedded Monitoring category. This
paper was based on work with one of our clients, STRAAM (www.straam.com), which accesses the integrity of infrastructure
(bridges, building supports, and so on). STRAAM is developing the embedded
monitoring system to collect acceleration data, perform proprietary
waveform analysis, and communicate with a centralized server for data
uploads and alerts.
There were 130 submissions for 7 categories
ranging from Automated Test to Robotics. Information about the GSD Awards
can be found at www.ni.com/gsdawards/.
Aerospace Testing Article
Viewpoint is pleased to be published
in the June issue of the ‘Aerospace Testing International’ magazine: http://www.aerospacetestinginternational.com/latest_issue.php.
The article is about the continued
wind tunnel work we are doing with Jack Gilbert and GDJ Inc.
Cool Video
You know how google places all those
topic relevant ads around your gmail inbox? Well, this video suggests
that searches are also being targeted based on your browsing history.

Part
3: How to Architect an Embedded Systems Application
|
Continuing with the theme of embedded
applications, this month will review the framework used for most embedded
system applications using NI RIO hardware. Next month, we’ll wrap
up with a closer look at some Reference Designs for inter-process communications.
An application based on the RIO platform
has three components: FPGA, RT, and Client PC. We need to connect them
all so data and status is available where it’s needed. How should
it all go together? By the way, this architecture is also useful for
any LabVIEW RT app connected to a client PC. Read on...

Motion Pictures Break into a Gallop |
Eadweard Muybridge (pronounced "my
bridge") produced a series of photographs capturing “The Horse
in motion” at Palo Alto track, 19 June 1878. Railroad magnate
and California governor Leland Stanford commissioned Muybridge to shoot
photographic evidence to show that horses that are galloping completely
lift all four hooves off the ground.
Muybridge arranged 24 cameras along
a track parallel to the horse's path. Trip wires placed in the
path of the horse, Sallie Gardner, and jockey, Doom triggered the cameras.
The motion picture showed a horse galloping at 1:40 gait would lift
all four hooves off the ground at the same time. The pictures
and their display device, the zoopraxiscope, helped lead the way for
future motion picture development.
