Notes from the EditorBig Wind Tunnels

Check out pages 39 to 41 of the ezine link below. This article comes from work we did last year on the Ethernet-based remote control and data collection from the wind tunnel and engine dyno.

And, then check out page 15 about hypersonic wind tunnels. Very cool. The apparently infamous Tunnel 9 is used to study scramjets. This tunnel can sustain Mach 14 for 15 seconds. That’s about 11000 mph. That’s actual speed, not simulated.

Cool Video

And to top off the article, check out this video about Tunnel 9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdhkx6RRhNI

Part 2: When Is a Test Executive Cost Effective?

You’ve reviewed the outline last month of pros and cons of using a Test Executive, and you decided that the reuse and leverage benefits apply. But, you wonder how you can justify the extra development costs. How many test systems do you need to develop and install before you start to see the cost benefit ROI of the leveraging? Read on...

The First GPS

On February 14, 1989, the US Department of Defense launched the first modern Global Positioning System satellite. By December 1993, a full constellation of 24 satellites were providing USDOD personnel position information that was accurate to less than 20 meters. Originally, the satellites degraded the signal for civilian use to be accurate within 100 meters. President Bill Clinton ordered this “Selective Availability” turned off at midnight May 1, 2000.

Today the US Government owns and operates GPS as a national resource. After the most recent launch on May 28, 2010, there were 32 GPS satellites providing coverage of the globe, the oldest of which launched shortly after start up on December 10, 1990.
